Sir Terence English visits new Royal Papworth Hospital

Former surgeon Sir Terence English was among a group of guests visiting the new Royal Papworth Hospital site at the weekend.

Sir Terence – who performed Britain's first successful heart transplant in August 1979 at Papworth – joined Trust Chairman Professor John Wallwork, Chief Executive Stephen Posey, Consultant Surgeon Mr John Dunning, former Chief Executive Stephen Bridge and CUH’s Chief Nurse Ann-Marie Ingle, among others, for a tour of the build.

The group saw how work on equipping the hospital was progressing, taking a particular interest in the Theatres area.

The new hospital, which will open on Cambridge’s Biomedical Campus in September 2018, was designed with the help of clinicians and with Royal Papworth Hospital’s patients in mind. In addition to 240 inpatient beds in single, en suite rooms, plus 46 beds in critical care and a separate day case facility, there will be five state-of-the-art theatres, five cath labs and two hybrid theatres.
