Freedom of Information (FOI)

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 recognises that the public has the right to know how public services such as NHS hospitals are organised and run.

Anyone requesting information from the Trust under the Freedom of Information Act can expect a response within twenty working days.

Requests can be submitted via the online form, or by emailing, or by writing to:
Freedom of Information Officer
Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Papworth Everard

Before submitting a request, please see if all or some of the information you require is already available on the Trust’s website, which acts as its Publication Scheme under the Act.

The right to request and access information held by the Trust is subject to some exemptions, which the Trust has to take into consideration before deciding on the types of information that can be released.  Such an exemption might arise, for example, where full disclosure in response to an FOI request might breach data protection principles, endangering the privacy of an individual in an unfair way.

Normally there would be no charge made to the requestor for the information supplied. However, if the amount of time needed to fulfil the request was likely to exceed 18 hours, then the Trust would need to make a charge for the work, and would contact the requestor to see if they wished to proceed on this basis.

The Trust has a duty to advise and assist enquirers, and would where possible also suggest a way in which the request might be refined or limited to bring down the number of hours it would take to fulfil.

The Freedom of Information Act does not change the right of patients to protection of their patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, common law and Article 8 of the Human Rights Convention.

More information about the Freedom of Information Act is available on the Information Commissioner’s website at:

New Environmental Information Regulations also came into force alongside the new FOI rules. These Regulations allow people to request environmental information from public authorities (such as this Trust), and also set a time limit on response - in this case, forty days.

If you are not satisfied with the Trust’s response, or want to complain about the way in which your request has been handled, you are entitled to request an internal review. To request an internal review, please contact the Trust at or write to:

Head of Business Services
Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Papworth Everard

If you are not satisfied by the outcome of the internal review, you can appeal against this decision by contacting the Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AF - Tel 08456 30 60 60.
