Radiology services

Papworth Hospital’s radiology service has a key role in the diagnosis of all cardiothoracic conditions. The service uses state-of-the art imaging technology and facilities include a CT and MRI scanner. The Radiology Department images over 50,000 patients each year.

Access to services

The Radiology Department operates on a five day week for booked cases, offering a clinical service to the local and visiting cardiologists, chest physicians, oncologists, transplant and surgical teams and provides 24 hour cover for emergencies. Direct access to a range of imaging tests is available to GPs and hospital clinicians from other Trusts.

Outside of normal working hours (Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm) emergency cover is provided by an on-site radiographer.

Radiology facilities include

The Radiology Department is well-equipped and fully digital with PACS for all imaging modalities as follows:

  • CT
     - 1 dual-source 64-slice scanner
     - 1 4-slice scanner
  • DEXA
     - 1 bone densitometry scanner
  • General radiography
     - 2 CR general radiography units.
     - 1 DR general radiography unit
     - 4 AMX mobile radiography units
  • MRI
     - 1 cardiac optimised 1.5T MRI scanner
  • Fluoroscopy
     - 1 non-cardiac intervention/bronchoscopy suite
     - 1 mobile image intensifier (theatre)
  • Nuclear medicine suite
     - 2 dual-headed gamma cameras
     - 2 cardiac stress rooms
     - 1 isotope preparation room
  • Ultrasound
     - 2 ultrasound units (with colour Doppler)

Our staff

The multi-disciplinary team of approx 100 staff includes highly-skilled radiologists, radiographers, specialist nurses and other support staff. As the cardiac angiography suites (cath labs) are located in radiology, we work closely alongside our cardiology colleagues.

The Radiology Department is part of the Clinical and Diagnostic Services Directorate managed by the Clinical Director, Dr Roger Hall; Directorate Manager, Maggie Maxwell; Radiology Services Manager, Caz Dyer and Business Unit Lead & Consultant Radiologist, Dr Bobby Agrawal.
