Travelling to Royal Papworth Hospital and the wider Cambridge Biomedical Campus has become easier for patients, staff and visitors with the opening of Cambridge South railway station today (Sunday 28 June).
The station, located just a two-minute walk from our hospital, provides quick and easy access to three NHS hospitals – Royal Papworth, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and The Rosie Hospital - and other academic, science, research and health organisations on campus.

The station has step-free access to all platforms, accessible toilets, cycle parking, a drop-off area and access for pedestrians from both sides. Its opening will benefit the approximate 40,000 visitors each day to the campus and the 33,00 people who live within a 2km radius.
Served by Greater Anglia, Cross Country, Great Northern and Thameslink services, a total of 344 trains a day will stop at Cambridge South. More than 60 stations will be served at least once every hour by a direct train from the new station.
Direct services will be available to and from London Liverpool Street, London King’s Cross, Norwich, Cambridge, King’s Lynn, Brighton, Birmingham, Peterborough and Ely.
For international travel, direct services will also be available to and from London Stansted Airport (more than 190 destinations worldwide) and London St Pancras (for Eurostar rail services to Europe).
The new station was built thanks to more than £250 million of government funding, alongside £5 million contributions from AstraZeneca, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority and the Greater Cambridge Partnership.
