Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been named as one of the top NHS Trusts in the country for inpatient care, according to the Care Quality Commission Adult Inpatient Survey 2024.

The annual survey looks at the experiences of people who stayed at least one night in hospital. It asked patients aged 16 years and over for their views on all aspects of their care, such as: the hospital environment; communication with staff; involvement in decisions; and being treated with dignity and respect.

Royal Papworth was one of eight hospitals to have achieved the highest band of ‘much better than expected’, which is based on the proportion of patients who responded positively compared to the national average.

It is the sixth year-in-a-row that our hospital has been named in the top category.

On average, patients rated the overall experience as 9.1 out of 10.

The Trust scored particularly highly for privacy (9.8), cleanliness (9.7), getting enough to drink (9.8), having confidence and trust in the doctors (9.6) and nurses (9.4), being treated with respect and dignity (9.6), being treated with kindness and compassion (9.5) and being given enough information about their condition or treatment (9.3).

Dr Ian Smith, Chief Medical Officer at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We’re delighted to see more excellent results in the CQC Adult Inpatient Survey.

“Achieving and sustaining such high standards is a clear reflection of the exceptional care our teams provide every single day. Their dedication, teamwork and commitment to our values of excellence, compassion, and collaboration are evident in the positive experiences our patients report.

“I’m incredibly proud of their work and I’m sure they’ll take pride in these results too."

Eilish Midlane, Chief Executive at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, added: “We're incredibly grateful to every patient who took the time to complete the CQC Adult Inpatient Survey. Their feedback helps us recognise areas we're doing well in, while also highlighting others where more attention is required.

“Whether from patients, visitors or staff, feedback we receive throughout the year is invaluable, helping us to continuously improve and help shape services that truly meet the needs of those we care for.”

The report summarises the experiences of more than 62,000 patients who used NHS adult inpatient services during November 2024.

At Royal Papworth 792 patients completed the survey, a 65% response rate. This is a much higher response rate than the national average of 41%.

Trusts were then assigned one of five bands according to their overall performance across the survey: ‘much worse than expected’, ‘worse than expected’, ‘about the same’, ‘better than expected’ or ‘much better than expected’.
