A special feature about heart transplantation at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has aired on the BBC's flagship magazine and chat show, 'The One Show'.
Earlier this year, we celebrated 10 years since performing Europe's first non-beating heart transplant, known as donation after circulatory death (DCD).
DCD heart transplantation was made possible thanks to research carried out by our clinicians and funded by Royal Papworth Hospital Charity. It has meant hundreds more people in the UK, and many more globally, have received the life saving gift of a new heart.
James had a heart transplant at Royal Papworth and features in this report
In this programme, either available on the BBC iPlayer (available for 28 days) and below, you will:
- see special footage from inside an operating theatre during a DCD heart transplant
- hear from consultant surgeon Mr Muhammad Umar Rafiq
- meet James, a doctor himself and a dad-of-three from Surrey who had a heart transplant at our hospital
Thank you to all organ donors, without whom none of this work performed by our amazing teams would ever be possible.
