Professor Graham Martin has been appointed as a non-executive director at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
In his role at THIS Institute (The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute), Graham leads research programmes and contributes to strategy and development.
An experienced and keen researcher, Graham was previously Professor of Health Organisation and Policy at the University of Leicester, and acted as Head of Department of Health Sciences from 2015 to 2018.
He is also a trustee of the Nuffield Trust, the leading UK health and social care think tank.
The appointment follows a highly competitive application and interview process.
Graham said: “I’m looking forward to joining Royal Papworth Hospital at a time of rapid change and huge challenge in the NHS.
“I want to ensure that Royal Papworth continues to deliver outstanding care to the people it serves, works with other organisations locally and nationally to improve quality and access, and supports its talented staff to provide the best care possible to patients.
“With the imminent launch of the trust’s new five-year strategy, it is an exciting time to join, and I look forward to doing my bit to help the hospital go from strength to strength.”
Graham will formally begin his role at the Board meeting on Thursday 6 November.
He replaces Gavin Robert, who has stepped down at the end of his latest term.
Dr Jag Ahluwalia, Chair of the Board, said: “I want to thank Gavin for all of his contributions as a non-executive director, including his roles as chair of our performance committee and clinical ethics committee, and as a member of the end-of-life steering group.
“His support to the Board and the trust has been unwavering; his wise counsel, constantly clear analysis and articulation of our challenges and opportunities as a hospital.
“At the same time, it’s a very warm welcome to Graham. He comes with a great breadth of experience and skills in healthcare improvement, strategy, policy and academic rigour.
“We look forward to his contributions to Royal Papworth at our board meetings, as chair of the quality and risk committee from January 2026 and a member of the audit committee.”
